Get exam‑ready.
Please read this thoroughly before your session. A few minutes of prep makes exam day quick, smooth, and stress‑free.
Two devices are required for testing.
Any combo works: PC + phone, tablet + phone, or even two phones. Your second device gives us a second view during the exam. When it's time, join the Zoom link we send you on both devices.
Exam preparation & tips.
Recording consent
- When you join, you must acknowledge applicable recording laws.
- A 360° room scan and a clear view of your work surface are required.
- To protect your privacy, remove personal or sensitive items from your testing space.
- By participating, you consent to the recording, storage, and possible review of video, audio, and images during the session.
- Recordings are stored securely and never shared, unless misconduct is detected, in which case they may be submitted to the FCC.
Get your FRN
An FCC Registration Number is required when applying for a new license. Current license holders already have an FRN linked to their call sign.
- No FRN yet? Apply instantly at FCC CORES.
- Make sure your FCC registration matches your government‑issued ID.
Youth applicants
We're excited to welcome young hobbyists into amateur radio! The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires a parent or legal guardian to complete a COPPA form.
- Download and complete the form during registration at HamStudy.org.
- Email it to coppa@examtools.org and support@nz3c.com.
- Both the parent or guardian and the youth must consent to the session being recorded.
- Exams are FREE for youth under 18. No exam fee to pay.
Photo ID required
Be ready to show your government‑issued photo ID to the exam team.
- Also accepted: birth certificate, school ID, passport, or similar official documents.
Device prep
- Close all non‑essential apps: email, messaging, alerts, Teams, Discord, games, and remote‑access software.
- A team member will quickly check your device before the exam. Please follow their instructions.
- During the exam, only Zoom and a web browser with one tab should be open.
- Earbuds or a headset are fine for talking to us beforehand, but all wearables (headphones, smartwatches, smart glasses) come off before you start.
Room prep
- Choose a quiet, private, distraction‑free space and stay on camera the whole time.
- Clear your work area of books, notes, posters, whiteboards, and any test materials.
- Test alone and unassisted. Applicants under 18 may have a parent or guardian present.
- Cover or turn around any extra monitors, TVs, tablets, or smart devices the team can't see at all times.
You're prepped. Let's book it.
