Questions, answered.
Everything people usually ask before their exam: what's allowed, how long it takes, what it costs, and when you'll get your call sign.
How much is the exam fee?
The exam costs $15 for adults and FREE for youth under 18.
What payment methods does NZ3C accept?
We process payments through Stripe. You can use credit cards, debit cards, Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, Cash App Pay, Google Pay, Link, Samsung Pay, and Klarna.
Can I use a calculator and/or scratch paper?
Yes, with a few stipulations. You can only use the calculator built into the exam software; no physical calculators are allowed. You may have one blank piece of paper during your exam.
Can anyone be in the room with me during my exam?
Only youth applicants under 18 may have a parent or guardian in the room. They must stay in camera view the entire time and can't offer any assistance.
How long will my exam take?
Please allow 15–30 minutes, including room scans, device checks, and instructions. Well‑prepared applicants typically finish in 7–14 minutes, plus a few more to complete electronic documents.
Do I have to install Zoom?
It isn't required, but we recommend it. The app runs much more smoothly than the web version, though the web version works in most cases.
What if my internet connection drops?
Don't sweat it! It can happen on our end too. We'll reconvene in a new session once a connection is available and start a new test.
When I pass, how long until I get my license?
We upload your test, application, and forms to the ARRL at close of business on exam day, and the ARRL forwards them to the FCC. You'll typically get an email from the FCC the next morning to pay the $35 application fee. You have 10 days to pay, but we recommend paying right away.
Pay by 5 pm Eastern, and the following business morning you should receive an email with your call sign and a link to download your license.
What happens if I fail? Can I retake it?
Yes, you can retake the exam immediately (for another exam fee).
Can I take Technician and General at the same time?
Yes! You can take all three levels in one session if you're prepared, and several applicants have pulled off the trifecta. One exam fee covers the next level if you decide to go up in the same session.
